any hints other than giving it time and bio-spira to speed up nitrites? My current three are: Ammonia: 0 - Nitrites: 5.0+ - Nitrates: 20. How am I going to speed up the processing of the nitrites?

Even Bio Spira can speed this up only so fast. You are using the pure ammonia method if I am correct. This method is effective, but notoriously slow, which is a reason I rarely recommend it to newbie’s as impatience will usually get the better of them (not that I am calling you a newbie). At this point you could add the Bio Spira or you can add filter media from an established aquarium (such as a sponge or used filter cartridge, upper layers of gravel work almost as well). I have still found this method the most effective, although when I moved and was without an aquarium a few years back, I used the fish food method, which also is slower like the ammonia method, but is effective (but I was not in a hurry, it took over 3 weeks!) Here is an article that is updated regularly about the Nitrogen Cycle: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Nitrogen_Cycle.htmlCarl

yep the pure ammonia method. I am one who has the patients of my good intentions tested by this whole cycling thing. I have been cycling since Christmas Eve. Just over a month. One big reason I have for cycling is that I want it to NOT crash when I add fish as I am always busy. Two or three fish a week will keep it from crashing and me having some time consuming and frustrating circumstances on my hands. Happy fisheys are what I want. (I love spelling things with a "y" lol.) Father time is to slow lol!
